Rinella Battery, Artillery battery and military museum in Kalkara, Malta
Rinella Battery is an artillery installation in Kalkara with a pentagon-shaped layout surrounded by a deep protective ditch and underground loading chambers. The complex includes soldier accommodation areas and now houses an exhibition with thousands of artifacts from British military history.
The site was built by the British in 1878 to defend the island and was equipped with a massive gun. It played an important role in British military strategy in the Mediterranean during the Victorian era.
The exhibition displays daily life of soldiers from the Victorian era through weapons, uniforms, and personal items visitors can see firsthand. The site tells the story of garrison soldiers and their role in British military presence on the island.
Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and several stairs lead up and down when exploring. It is best to visit during daylight hours to fully see the underground areas and exhibition rooms.
The main gun was a 100-ton Armstrong cannon, one of the most powerful weapons of its time, mounted at this installation. Despite its immense power, the weapon was only used for testing and never saw actual combat.
