Auberge de Castille et Portugal, Historic Grade 2 auberge in Vittoriosa, Malta
The Auberge de Castille features traditional Melitan architecture with characteristic stone quoins and period windows along its symmetrical facade in Birgu.
Built during the 1530s, the original auberge served as residence for knights from Castille, León and Portugal of the Order of Saint John.
The building represents the strong connection between Malta and the Iberian Peninsula through its architectural elements and historical purpose.
The exterior of this privately owned building can be viewed daily from Hilda Tabone Street, formerly known as Barrack Front Street.
The structure maintains its original Melitan mouldings on several windows, providing evidence of its 16th-century architectural heritage.
