Auberge d'Auvergne et Provence, Grade 1 heritage auberge in Birgu, Malta.
The Auberge d'Auvergne et Provence is a three-story heritage building located in the narrow streets of Birgu's old district. The facade features a traditional Maltese doorway with moulded cornice and period stonework.
The building was constructed in 1531 when two separate auberges were combined to house knights from the Auvergne and Provence regions of the Order of Saint John. This merger showed how the Order organized housing for knights from different regions.
The building displays architectural features that blend French and Italian influences, reflecting the international presence of the Knights in medieval Malta. This mixture is visible in the facade details and the layout of the rooms.
The building sits in the historic streets of Birgu, an area with narrow, winding lanes and cobblestone paths. Exploring the surroundings works best on foot and at a slow pace to take in the old district.
The interior spaces maintain their original 16th-century layout with distinctly separated sections for the two regional knight groups. This spatial division still allows visitors to understand how the two communities coexisted under one roof.
