Chapel of Our Lady of Damascus, Birgu, Baroque chapel in Birgu, Malta.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Damascus is a baroque chapel in Birgu with a characteristic stone facade located near the Oratory of St Joseph. It preserves an original altar and houses a Madonna image, though an earlier painting was relocated to Valletta.
The building was originally dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria but received its current name after 1522 when Greek refugees arrived from Rhodes. This rededication marked an important shift in the site's religious history.
The chapel reflects the history of Greek Catholic communities in Malta who conducted religious ceremonies here following Byzantine traditions. Their presence shaped the religious life of Birgu over several centuries.
The chapel is located in Birgu's old town and is easily accessible on foot by following local streets. You can admire the exterior at any time, and regular daytime visits offer the best conditions for exploring.
After Malta's recapture in 1565, Grand Master Jean de la Valette visited this chapel to express his gratitude. The event connects the site to a decisive moment in Malta's defensive history.
