Auberge d'Angleterre, Knights headquarters in Vittoriosa, Malta
The Auberge d'Angleterre is a two-story limestone building with a central courtyard and windows framed by Melitan mouldings throughout its facade. Inside, barrel-vaulted passages and diaphragm arches structure the spaces and connect the rooms.
Built in 1533, the structure was created for the English Knights when they arrived in Malta as part of the military order of St. John. The builders incorporated an existing single-story foundation and expanded it upward.
The building became a center where the English Knights maintained their own community and traditions within Malta's multicultural military order. You can sense how the design served their specific needs for both private life and collective gatherings.
The monument is accessible from Triq il-Majjistral street in the heart of Vittoriosa and currently houses offices of Malta's health department. The central courtyard makes navigation straightforward, and the limestone facade is clearly visible from the street.
On the ground floor, a grand hall served both as dining room and assembly space for the English Knights, making it the heart of their collective life. The commander's quarters were positioned separately within the same building.
