Spinola Battery, ehemaliges Krankenhaus in Malta
Spinola Battery is a coastal defense installation in St. Julian's, Malta, built between 1889 and 1894. The structure consists of concrete and stone with thick walls, gun openings, and underground tunnels designed to house soldiers and ammunition.
The installation was originally equipped with four guns, including two large 9.2-inch cannons for coastal defense. During World War I, it was converted into Spinola Hospital from 1915 to 1917 to care for wounded soldiers and civilians.
The name Spinola comes from a local family prominent in the area. Visitors walking around the site today can see the thick walls and gun openings that tell stories of how coastal defense was organized centuries ago.
The site is easily accessible from St. Julian's and located near restaurants, shops, and beaches. It makes sense to combine a visit here with a walk along the coast or a day at nearby swimming areas.
The site was converted into a film studio called Brittania Studios in 1969, where numerous movies with famous actors were filmed. This unexpected use shows how military structures were later repurposed for artistic purposes.
