Palazzo Fremaux, Former palace in Żejtun, Malta.
Palazzo Fremaux was a two-story palace on St Catherine Street featuring architectural details typical of Maltese noble residences from the period. The building included gardens and displayed stonework, window treatments, and an entrance befitting its status.
The palace was built as a private residence in the late 1700s and later served the British military as a hospital during the French blockade from 1798 to 1800. Interior spaces were altered to accommodate medical operations during this period.
The palace was home to Count Agostino Formosa de Fremaux, a Maltese nobleman who served as Dutch Consul in Malta. His family held significant social standing in Żejtun's community.
The palace no longer exists, having been gradually demolished between 1990 and 2003 despite its Grade 2 protected status. Visitors can only explore the location on St Catherine Street where this historic building once stood.
The building's historic facade was demolished in 2002 despite its protected status, sparking protests from heritage groups. This event became a turning point in debates about protecting architectural monuments in Malta.
