Windmill Redoubt, Military redoubt in Żabbar, Malta.
The Windmill Redoubt was a triangular fortification in Żabbar with defensive walls that integrated an existing windmill as a blockhouse. This mill served as an observation post overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Local fighters built this fortification during the French blockade between 1798 and 1800 to defend against forces in the harbors. The structure was constructed as part of efforts to establish a protective line around French-held positions.
The fortification shows how local residents built defenses to protect the area from attacks during times of conflict. The site held importance as a protective stronghold for the surrounding communities.
The location controlled the road linking three villages and was an important traffic point in the region. Visitors should note that only the original windmill remains, now positioned at a modern roundabout.
The original windmill dates from 1710 and was commissioned under Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful. Today this stone structure stands at a roundabout and is one of the few surviving traces of the fortification from that era.
