Chapel of St Anne, Fort St Angelo

The Chapel of St Anne in Fort St Angelo is a small church building featuring an arched doorway, an oval window, and a bell tower topped with a Maltese cross. It stands within the fortress walls and is now integrated into the museum facilities there.

The chapel was first built by the De Nava family in the 15th century on the remains of an earlier temple, and was later enlarged by the Knights of St John. These changes reflect how the fortress itself evolved as power and authority passed between different rulers.

The chapel served as a burial place for important leaders and held religious significance within the fortress community. Visitors can sense its role in the spiritual life of those who lived and worked within these walls.

The chapel is accessible to visitors as part of guided tours through the fortress, since the site operates as a museum. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the fortress involves uneven terrain and multiple levels.

A pink granite column, possibly from an ancient temple, serves as a roof support inside the chapel and connects the site's long past to its present form. This reused stone shows how earlier structures were incorporated into later construction.
