Church of Our Lady of Liesse, Baroque church along Grand Harbour in Valletta, Malta
The Church of Our Lady of Liesse is a limestone building with a central dome and three altars designed by architect Francesco Zammit in 1740. A separate belfry tower completes the structure and shapes its exterior appearance.
The foundation stone was laid in 1620 in the presence of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, with construction funded by Fra Giacomo De Chess du Bellay. The project was part of Valletta's architectural expansion during that era.
The main altar painting shows three knights and Our Lady of Liesse, reflecting religious devotion on the island. Visitors can see how this image connects to local faith practices that continue today.
The building opens regularly for visitors and offers guided tours that explain its architecture, religious purpose, and historical context. Allow time to explore both the interior and observe the exterior details from different angles.
The building houses relics of Saint Generoso transferred from Fort Manoel and a Virgin Mary statue originally displayed at Fort Saint Elmo. These objects connect the religious history of several military fortifications on the island.
