Auberge de Castille

The Auberge de Castille is a Baroque building in Valletta with a rectangular structure and a central courtyard surrounded by decorated corridors. The building sits on elevated ground and offers views toward the harbor and surrounding districts.

The building was constructed in 1574 by architect Girolamo Cassar as headquarters for the Knights of Castile, Leon, and Portugal from the Order of Saint John. These knightly orders played an important role in Mediterranean history during that era.

The building displays Spanish Baroque elements with finely carved stones and symmetrical patterns across its facade. These details create a visual impression of craftsmanship and show how much the residents valued artistic decoration.

The building serves today as the office of Malta's Prime Minister and can be viewed from outside year-round. The best time to visit is during brighter hours of the day when architectural details are visible in good light.
