Upper Barrakka Gardens, Public garden in Valletta, Malta
The Upper Barrakka Gardens sit on the St. Peter and Paul Bastions and feature stone arches with terraces overlooking the Grand Harbor of Malta. The layout spreads across multiple levels with paved pathways and trees that provide shade throughout the grounds.
An Italian knight constructed the garden arches in 1661, initially covered with a roof that was later removed following an uprising in the early 1700s. This change transformed the appearance and function of the space over time.
The gardens display monuments to notable figures and house a replica of the Les Gavroches sculpture that visitors encounter while walking through the space.
The Barrakka Elevator connects the gardens to the Lascaris Wharf below using a modern lift system that helps visitors navigate between levels. Those who prefer walking can also use stairs to explore the different elevations throughout the grounds.
This location offers sweeping views of the Grand Harbor and the Three Cities of Malta from one of Valletta's highest points. The vantage point draws many visitors, particularly at sunset when the water takes on golden tones.
