Ġnien is-Sultan, Public park in Valletta, Malta.
Ġnien is-Sultan is a park in Valletta with multiple levels overlooking the Grand Harbour. The grounds contain Mediterranean plants and decorative stone fountains arranged throughout the space.
The park was created in the 17th century by Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris as a summer retreat with Baroque design. Later modifications transformed it into the public green space that exists in Valletta today.
The name means King's Garden in Maltese, reflecting the historical connection to the rulers who governed Malta from Valletta. The layout and plantings show how the Grand Masters shaped this space as a place for leisure and display of their power.
The park can be entered from several streets around the old city and connects to walking paths throughout Valletta. Wear comfortable shoes since there are different elevation changes within the grounds.
A fountain from the original garden was moved to Argotti Gardens and features a curved basin held up by Tuscan pillars showing the Baroque craft. This relocation shows how the space changed over the centuries as needs shifted.
