Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, International airport in Abuja, Nigeria
Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is an international airport in Abuja, Nigeria, located about 20 kilometers southwest of the Federal Capital Territory center. The facility has two terminal areas sharing a single runway roughly 3600 meters long (around 11800 feet).
The Nigerian government opened this airport in 2002 and named it after the first president of independent Nigeria. A major runway refurbishment in 2017 led to a six-week closure with flight operations moved to Kaduna.
The airport carries the name of Nigeria's first president and marks a symbolic entry point into the capital region. Visitors often notice the mix of business travelers and government representatives passing through the terminal.
The terminal is divided into separate areas for domestic flights and international connections, so travelers should locate the correct section for their journey. Arrivals from abroad pass through standard immigration checks and customs clearance before leaving the airport grounds.
During the 2017 runway works, passengers flying to Abuja had to endure a five-hour bus transfer from Kaduna. This unusual arrangement turned the journey to the capital into a multi-stage experience for weeks.
