Imo State, Administrative division in southern Nigeria
Imo State stretches across several rivers and hills in southern Nigeria, connecting forested areas with open grasslands. Palm trees and dense greenery alternate here with settlements where markets and workshops are scattered.
British forces established a first military post here in 1901 and incorporated the territory into a larger protectorate. The current state emerged in 1976 through administrative reform from older provinces.
People here use the Igbo word "Imu" for their homeland, which refers to an earlier river. Local carvers still craft wooden masks following traditional patterns in small workshops today.
The capital Owerri sits centrally and provides access to main road connections. During the rainy season between April and October, some unpaved routes become difficult to pass.
The technology university in Owerri was founded in 1980 and attracts students from across the country. Its library preserves a collection of rare Igbo manuscripts.
