Owerri Municipal

Owerri Municipal is an administrative district in southeastern Nigeria where the capital city of Imo State is located. The district comprises several neighborhoods and serves as a major center for government and commerce in the region.

The area originated from five separate villages that developed as independent communities before British colonization in the early 1900s. These different settlements later merged into a single administrative unit under colonial rule.

The area is home to Igbo people whose traditions shape daily interactions and community gatherings throughout the district. The language spoken, local food, and how people conduct business and settle matters reflect this cultural identity.

An annual celebration called Oru Owere takes place over several months and includes ceremonies, music, and feasting that visitors can experience. This gathering draws people from across the region who come together to celebrate their bonds with one another.
