Owerri Municipal covers 58 square kilometers and functions as an administrative district within Imo State, housing the state capital city of Owerri.
The area originated from five distinct villages - Umuororonjo, Amawom, Umuonyeche, Umuodu, and Umuoyima - before British colonization in 1901.
The Oha Owere elders council maintains traditional governance structures and mediates land disputes according to established local customs.
The district intersects major roads connecting to Port Harcourt, Onitsha, and Aba, making it a central transportation hub in southern Nigeria.
The annual Oru Owere festival, held from June to August, includes a ceremonial kola nut breaking at Ugwu Ekwema followed by communal celebrations.
