Ogbaukwu Caves and Waterfall, Cave system and natural waterfall in Anambra State, Nigeria
The Ogbaukwu site contains extensive caverns within a subterranean chasm, connected by multiple passageways that extend deep into the earth's surface.
The caves were discovered by Ukwa from the Umucheke family of Ifite-Ogbunike, leading to their recognition as the largest cave formation in West Africa.
The local population considers the water dripping from the cave ceiling sacred, and both religious leaders and traditional healers collect it for ceremonies.
Visitors need to descend 317 steps to reach the main cave entrance, remove their shoes before entering, and must exit through a different path than entry.
The cave chambers house numerous bats, pythons, and crocodiles, with one section containing preserved remnants of an elephant's foot.
