National Assembly of Nigeria, Legislative complex in Abuja, Nigeria
The National Assembly Complex stands in the government district of Abuja and houses two separate chamber halls for the Senate and the House of Representatives. The building follows a modern design with wide corridors, office areas for legislators, and working rooms for parliamentary committees.
The return to democracy in 1999 brought the parliament back together after years of military rule. Since then, the assembly has met continuously as the lawmaking institution of the Nigerian federal republic.
The color-coded chambers follow British parliamentary traditions that arrived in Nigeria during the colonial period. This separation still highlights the dual structure of lawmaking in the Nigerian government system today.
Public access usually follows advance registration and security checks, as the grounds are considered a government area. Sessions take place during scheduled sitting periods, outside of which the building is closed to visitors.
Senators use the Red Chamber for their debates, while representatives meet in the Green Chamber. This color assignment helps visitors navigate the parliamentary building and mirrors the division of legislative tasks.
