In 1884, the chiefs of Eket signed a treaty of friendship and protection with British representatives, establishing colonial rule over the territory. This agreement shaped the region's administrative structure and governance practices for decades to come.
The indigenous people of Eket, known as Ekid, belong to the Ibibio ethnic group and maintain their traditional clans of Afaha, Ekid Offiong, Idua, and Okon.
