Akwa Ibom State, Administrative division in southern Nigeria
Akwa Ibom is an administrative division in southern Nigeria situated between Cross River State and Rivers State, with its southern boundary meeting the Atlantic Ocean. The territory includes coastal zones, river estuaries, and tropical forest areas connected by a network of roads.
The Nigerian government created this administrative division on September 23, 1987, by separating it from the former Cross River State. The decision was part of a broader reform to reorganize the federal structure of the country.
The population comprises three main ethnic groups - Ibibio, Annang, and Oron - each maintaining distinct languages, traditions, and social structures.
The capital city Uyo serves as a transport hub with road connections to other major cities and an international airport offering regular flights to Lagos and Abuja. Most visitors arrive during the dry season between November and March when roads are more accessible.
The Stubb Creek Forest Reserve in the southeastern section hosts numerous primate species and serves as a research center for tropical biodiversity. Scientists from different countries come here to study rainforest ecosystems.
