Agege, Local government area in Lagos, Nigeria
Agege is a local government area in Lagos State that spans multiple neighborhoods bordered by Abule Egba, Ikeja, Iyana Ipaja, and Ogba. The district consists mainly of residential areas, markets, and major roads that run through its different sections.
Established in 1954, the area grew from kola nut plantations where tree cutters worked, giving it a name derived from the Yoruba phrase age igi. Its roots as a farming area shaped what the place became over the decades.
The area reflects Yoruba traditions through its community markets and local gatherings that shape daily social life. The Awori people and their leadership structures play a central role in how residents connect with one another.
The Pen Cinema flyover, completed in 2021, connects major roads and makes travel through the area simpler. Multiple entry points and bus routes serve different neighborhoods throughout the district.
The area is known across the state for a distinctive type of bread with a soft texture that stays fresh longer without needing preservatives. This traditional baked product sets it apart from other bread found in Lagos.
