Established during the Ogiso era in the 10th century, Unuamen served as an important settlement for the Benin Kingdom and maintained strong connections with various Obas.
The position of Okao of Unuame, established during Oba Ewuare's reign in 1440, continues to function as the hereditary leader representing the Benin monarch.
Located 15 kilometers from Benin City and 20 kilometers from Benin Airport, Unuamen provides access to traditional fishing and farming activities along the Ovia River.
The village maintains ancient ceremonial grounds where community elders perform annual rituals to honor historical figures connected to the Benin Kingdom.
