Crushed Rock, Mpape

Crushed Rock in Mpape is an active quarry with multiple extraction levels, steep rock faces, and a natural lake in the center surrounded by fractured rock formations. The site displays various stages of quarrying activity with pathways threading through the different elevation levels.

The quarry was extensively mined during the 1980s to supply building stone for Abuja's rapid development as Nigeria's new capital city. This period of heavy extraction shaped the landscape and terrain structure visible today.

The name Mpape comes from the Gwari language and means 'rock', a reference that remains visible in the landscape today. This linguistic connection helps explain why the geological features are so dominant in how people perceive this location.

The fracturing of an underground aquifer in this naturally fissured zone created the central lake that now defines the quarry. This lake formed through natural geological processes exposed during extraction.
