Geleen, Municipal town in South Limburg, Netherlands.
Geleen is a town in southern Limburg that stretches across the Geleenbeek river valley at an elevation of about 60 meters. The settlement is connected by two railway stations serving different regional routes, making it accessible from neighboring towns.
The town developed during the 20th century when coal mining transformed the region after the opening of the Maurits mine, one of Europe's largest at the time. This industrial growth changed the area from a small rural settlement into an economic hub.
The Pinkpop music festival established its roots in Geleen, holding performances from 1970 to 1986 before relocating to a different municipality.
The town is easily reached by train, with two stations offering connections to nearby towns on different routes. Visitors can choose between stations depending on where they want to go or which direction suits them best.
Archaeologists discovered remains of prehistoric farms here that rank among the oldest known settlements in the Netherlands. These ancient site traces show the area was inhabited long before the modern town developed.
