The University of Groningen is a public research institution in the Dutch city of the same name with eleven faculties and nine graduate schools. Around 34,000 students from 120 countries enroll in 175 degree programs there.
Founded in 1614 with four faculties for Theology, Law, Medicine and Philosophy. This makes it the second oldest higher education institution in the Netherlands.
The name comes from the founding location, a medieval town in the northern Netherlands. Campus buildings blend into the city fabric and students move daily through parks and squares in the center.
Students use lecture halls, laboratories, libraries and research facilities at several locations in the northern Dutch city. Many facilities are within walking distance in the city center, others lie in adjacent neighborhoods.
The institution participates in European projects on synthetic cell development and biodiversity restoration. These initiatives receive major research funding from Brussels.
