BritNed, Submarine power cable between Isle of Grain, Kent and Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, England and Netherlands.
BritNed is a high-voltage direct current submarine cable that joins the power grids of Great Britain and the Netherlands beneath the North Sea. The connection runs from Isle of Grain in Kent to Maasvlakte near Rotterdam, allowing electricity to flow in both directions between the two countries.
Construction started in September 2009 and finished in October 2010, with operations beginning in April 2011. It was developed as a joint effort between Britain's National Grid and the Netherlands' TenneT to enable cross-border electricity supply.
The interconnector represents a collaboration between National Grid and TenneT, demonstrating cross-border cooperation in European energy distribution networks.
The cable runs invisible beneath the sea with no public access points, but its operations can be monitored remotely. Public information about operational status and capacity is available through specialized energy monitoring platforms.
The system can send power in either direction and helps keep both electrical grids steady when one side has extra energy or faces high demand. This flexibility allows both countries to balance their energy supply and avoid costly outages.
