Sion

Sion is a residential area in Rijswijk located at the border between Rijswijk and the municipalities of Delft and Midden-Delfland. The neighborhood includes various housing types such as family homes with gardens, semi-detached houses, detached residences, and apartment buildings.

Monks established the monastery Sancta Maria in Monte Sion at this location in 1345. The structure was destroyed in 1572 during military conflicts with Spanish forces.

The Novo Sion art route displays 16 artworks made of corten steel and concrete reliefs throughout the neighborhood. These works connect the present-day community with the monastic heritage that once defined the area.

The area is easily accessible and offers a good mix of newly built residential spaces and green areas. Visitors can explore the Novo Sion art route on foot and discover the various artistic installations throughout the neighborhood.

Archaeological excavations in 2015 revealed the remains of the medieval monastery, including chapel foundations, water wells, and skeletal remains. These findings brought to light the hidden history of the place that had been buried for centuries.
