Radboud University Nijmegen, Public research university in Nijmegen, Netherlands
Radboud University Nijmegen is a public research university in Nijmegen with seven faculties spread across a wide green campus. Lecture halls, laboratories and student housing form their own small urban landscape within Nijmegen.
The university opened in 1923 as Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen to strengthen Catholic participation in Dutch higher education. It was later renamed after Bishop Radboud and opened its doors to a global academic community.
The name honors Radboud of Utrecht, a ninth-century bishop, while the campus today serves as a meeting point for students and researchers from around the world. Libraries and cafeterias blend academic study with the everyday rhythm of a Dutch university town.
The campus lies southeast of the city center and can be reached by buses and bicycle paths from different parts of Nijmegen. Visitors should note that buildings are spread across the grounds and signposts help with navigation.
Several faculties stand along Heijendaalseweg, a road that runs through the grounds and links the campus with residential neighborhoods. A botanical garden at the edge of the campus holds plant species from different climate zones and also serves teaching purposes.
