Cauberg

Cauberg is a hill in Valkenburg aan de Geul that stretches for about 1.2 kilometers and offers an elevation gain of roughly 69 meters, reaching a maximum height of 143 meters above sea level. The road running through this area features various points of interest scattered along the route.

The road through Cauberg was first paved with cobblestones in 1934, making it an important local route. Later in the 1960s, the cobblestones were replaced with asphalt to improve traffic conditions and accessibility.

The hill holds a Lourdes grotto with an open-air chapel where visitors find a place for quiet reflection. A memorial here honors Limburgian resistance fighters from World War II, telling the story of the region's past.

Cyclists can use the road, but should watch for regular traffic moving through the area. It is wise to stay alert and pay attention to visibility conditions, particularly when light is low or the weather is damp.

Beneath the hill lies the Gemeentegrot, a cave network featuring limestone sculptures and an underground lake that visitors can explore with guided tours. This hidden world underground offers a completely different view of the region and reveals the geological story beneath the surface.
