Grottenaquarium Valkenburg, Marine aquarium in Trichterberggroeve, Netherlands
Grottenaquarium Valkenburg was a marine aquarium located within a network of limestone caves in Valkenburg aan de Geul. The facility distributed multiple tanks throughout the natural underground passages, displaying various marine species alongside amphibians and reptiles.
The aquarium opened in 1954 inside former marl mines and operated until 2014, when it closed due to animal welfare concerns that arose following the owner's death. Prior to this, competing underground aquariums had emerged in the region during the 1950s.
The former facility reflected a regional trend of converting underground mining spaces into public attractions that educated visitors about marine life while repurposing industrial sites.
The cave system maintained a constant year-round temperature of approximately 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit), providing stable conditions for both marine life and visitors. This underground location naturally regulated temperature and reduced seasonal fluctuations.
During the 1950s, this location competed with other underground aquariums in the region and attracted more visitors due to its central position. The proximity to Cauberg gave it an advantage over similar facilities that opened nearby.
