Sint Andries is a small settlement near Fort Sint-Andries in Maasdriel, with several houses positioned east of the fort and lock. The houses sit in a location where the Maas and Waal rivers flow closest to each other.
Fort Sint-Andries was built in 1599 under Francesco de Mendoza as a strategic fortress to control river traffic during the Siege of Zaltbommel. During World War II, German forces destroyed the fort in 1945 after an attack by British Royal Marines and the Belgian Second Battalion Fusiliers.
The Dutch military heritage remains visible through the preserved ruins of the New Fort Sint-Andries, built in 1812 to replace the original structure.
