Moordrecht, Historic village in Zuidplas, Netherlands.
Moordrecht is a residential village in the Zuidplaspolder that features residential streets and town squares arranged in a traditional Dutch village pattern. The settlement sits in a flat polder landscape characteristic of the region's water management infrastructure.
The settlement developed as part of the Zuidplaspolder scheme, a planned reclaimed landscape created during the 20th century. In 2010, it merged with neighboring communities to form the new municipality of Zuidplas.
Residents participate in community meetings at the former town hall, now transformed into the Sanare Vivere care villa for social gatherings.
The village is readily reached via highways A12 and A20 and sits close to major Dutch cities. The flat terrain makes cycling the preferred way to move around locally.
Parts of the village sit around 7 meters below sea level, making it one of the Netherlands' lowest inhabited places. This extreme depth shows the engineering achievement of the Dutch polder system that has worked for generations.
