Van Abbemuseum, Modern art museum in Eindhoven, Netherlands
Van Abbemuseum is an art museum in Eindhoven that stands along the Dommel River and holds more than two thousand seven hundred works from the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, installations and works on paper by international artists.
The museum opened in 1936 after a manufacturer donated a major collection to the city council under the condition that a dedicated building be created. A new wing with a tower was added in 2003 alongside the original structure from the 1930s.
The building takes its name from a cigar manufacturer who donated the collection to the city. The exhibition rooms are designed so visitors can interact directly with the works and often engage multiple senses.
The museum sits in central Eindhoven and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. Guided tours through the changing exhibitions are offered daily.
The collection holds one of the largest groups of works by Russian constructivist El Lissitzky outside Russia. The tall tower of the extension rises seven stories above the riverbank and is visible from several streets.
