Oude Plantage, Public park in Kralingen-Crooswijk, Netherlands
Oude Plantage is a park extending along the Nieuwe Maas river, stretching from Maasboulevard to De Esch. It provides walking paths that connect different neighborhoods while offering views toward the waterway and surrounding structures.
Rotterdam authorities acquired the land in 1688 and opened it as the city's first public park in 1769. It was one of the early organized green spaces created for the city's residents.
The park serves as a gathering place where neighbors meet and spend time together, particularly during local events in spring. Green areas and pathways are used daily by residents for walking, jogging, or simply enjoying proximity to the water.
The park is easily accessible on foot with multiple entry points from surrounding streets. Visitors should note that paths vary in width and surface quality, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
During the harsh winter of 1944 to 1945, residents removed trees for firewood, requiring a complete replanting effort in 1964. This recovery from that difficult period demonstrates how the park regained its importance to the community.
