Grote of Sint-Michaëlskerk, Gothic religious monument in Zwolle, Netherlands.
The Grote of Sint-Michaëlskerk is a Gothic church in the heart of Zwolle, built with three aisles and stone vaults that give the interior a tall, open feel. The building also holds an 18th-century organ and a finely carved wooden pulpit.
The church started to take its current Gothic form in the early 15th century, replacing an older building on the same spot. Its tower was brought down in 1682 by repeated lightning strikes and was never rebuilt to its original height.
The church is named after Archangel Michael, long seen as a protector in Christian tradition. Inside, the carved wooden pulpit draws the eye and gives a sense of the craftsmanship that local craftsmen brought to religious spaces over the centuries.
The church stands directly on Zwolle's central market square, making it easy to reach on foot from most parts of the old town. Since it is still an active place of worship, it is worth checking in advance whether a service or event is taking place during your visit.
During restoration work in the early 2000s, workers uncovered several burial chambers beneath the choir floor, showing that the building served as a burial site for centuries. The scale of the finds surprised the archaeologists involved, as the chambers had gone unnoticed for a very long time.
