Jerusalem, Religious community and monastery in Venray, Netherlands
Jerusalem is a former monastery and girls' school complex located on Heuvelstraat in central Venray, combining religious and educational spaces in one site. The buildings show different construction periods and were designed to house both a religious community and students in separate areas.
Founded in 1467, the monastery housed Canonesses of Saint Augustine who engaged in book copying, textile work, and teaching local girls over several centuries. The site evolved into a significant educational institution before closing in 1974.
The institution maintained the exclusive right to provide education alongside the Latin school, making it central to female education in Venray.
The buildings are now part of the town center and the former monastery house serves as the municipal town hall, making some areas accessible during office hours. Walking around the site and its surroundings provides a good sense of the complex within the urban landscape.
In 1915, the institution opened the first Roman Catholic girls' gymnasium in the Netherlands, a major milestone for female secondary education. This achievement represented a turning point in educational opportunities for girls in Dutch society.
