Negen Straatjes, Shopping district in Amsterdam-Centrum, Netherlands
Negen Straatjes is a neighbourhood of nine interconnected streets nestled between the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht, and Singel canals in central Amsterdam. The area contains over 140 registered historical buildings and monuments, many dating from the 17th century when the district took shape.
The district developed during Amsterdam's expansion in the 17th century when these streets were created to connect the main canals of the Grachtengordel. The area rapidly became a centre for leather and fur trade, activities that shaped the local economy for generations.
The street names like Berenstraat, Reestraat, and Wolvenstraat recall the leather and fur crafts that thrived here centuries ago. Today, the small shops and galleries reflect this artisanal heritage through their carefully designed window displays and curated collections.
The neighbourhood is easily reached on foot from Raadhuisstraat or Raadhuisplein, where several tram stops are located nearby. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the narrow lanes are paved with cobblestones and can get crowded during peak hours.
Many of the independent boutiques and second-hand shops are family-run and personally curated by their owners who select items according to their own taste. This strong local presence means the selection constantly changes and each visit offers different discoveries.
