Kopje van Bloemendaal, Nature area in Bloemendaal, Netherlands.
Kopje van Bloemendaal is a nature area in the municipality of Bloemendaal, in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland, made up of dune formations with open sandy patches and vegetation-covered sections. The terrain is hilly and crossed by a network of footpaths and cycling routes of different lengths.
The name comes from Afrikaans, the language of Dutch-speaking settlers in South Africa, where the word "kopje" means a small hill. The term was borrowed to name this dune formation, which stands out in the otherwise flat Dutch landscape.
The slopes are a well-known training spot among cyclists who come to build strength on the short but steep climbs. On weekends, groups of riders can be seen pushing up the hill repeatedly, making it a gathering point for cycling enthusiasts.
The area can be entered from several points around its edges, making it easy to start a walk or ride from different directions. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since some paths are sandy or uneven, especially after rain.
At the top of the hill stands a former military bunker from the Second World War that was later turned into a viewpoint open to visitors. From up there, you can look out over a wide stretch of dunes that are hard to see at ground level.
