Stadspark Maastricht, Urban park in Jekerkwartier, Netherlands
Stadspark Maastricht is a city park in the Jekerkwartier neighborhood, laid out along a stretch of medieval city wall and crossed by the Jeker river. The grounds include walking paths, a fountain, and small animal enclosures set within an area of grass and trees.
The city wall running along the park was built in the 13th century as part of Maastricht's first ring of fortifications. During the French siege of 1673, the musketeer d'Artagnan was killed in this part of the city, a fact still remembered today.
The park sits beside the Jekerkwartier, one of the oldest parts of Maastricht, and is a daily gathering spot for people from the surrounding streets. Along the old city wall, shaded paths allow visitors to walk directly beside medieval stonework that still stands at its original height.
The park has several entrances along Prins Bisschopssingel and is an easy walk from the city center. Once inside, the Jeker river is a useful landmark for getting your bearings, and paths run in both directions along the wall.
A bear pit with live bears was once one of the main draws of this park and operated here until the late 20th century. A bronze sculpture of a bear named Jo, sitting on a bench, now marks the spot where the enclosure used to stand.
