Stadspark Maastricht, Urban park in Jekerkwartier, Netherlands
Stadspark Maastricht is an urban green space in the Jekerkwartier with pathways along medieval fortification walls, a fountain, and animal enclosures. The Jeker river flows through the grounds and forms a central feature of the park.
The grounds contain sections of medieval city walls from the 13th century, including the preserved Helpoort gate, the oldest city gate in the Netherlands. The famous musketeer d'Artagnan died here during the 1673 French siege of the city.
The place takes its name from the Jeker river that flows through the city and has shaped its character for centuries. Visitors today can observe how this small waterway structures the layout and daily use of the green space.
You can reach the grounds from several entrances along Prins Bisschopssingel and from the city center. Dedicated pathways throughout the property allow for walking and cycling.
Until the late 20th century, a bear pit with live bears occupied this site. Today a sculpture of Jo the bear on a bench reminds visitors of this unusual chapter and shows how the place has transformed.
