Zuidplaspolder, Polder in South Holland, Netherlands
Zuidplaspolder is a polder located northeast of Rotterdam in South Holland. The flat landscape is bordered by settlements including Zevenhuizen, Waddinxveen, Moerkapelle, and Gouda, and today shows a mix of arable land and pastures.
Reclamation began in 1825 with about 30 windmills draining water into a ring canal, transforming the former lake into agricultural land by 1840. Steam pumps were introduced in 1880 to modernize the drainage process.
The polder is worked by farmers using techniques rooted in Dutch water management tradition. Visitors can observe these practices in action as part of everyday agricultural work here.
The best time to visit is during warmer months when field paths are walkable and the landscape is actively farmed. Visitors should wear suitable footwear and prepare for flat, open walking routes.
It sits about 7 meters below sea level, making it one of the lowest places in the European Union. This extreme depth requires constant pumping to keep the land dry.
