Typografengasthuis, Historical almshouse complex in Groningen, Netherlands.
The Typografengasthuis is an almshouse complex in Groningen containing 47 dwelling units arranged in a rectangular pattern around a central courtyard measuring 85 by 17 meters. Six houses along the street frontage are linked by an archway passage, creating a unified architectural composition.
The Groninger Boekverkoopers College established this housing complex in 1903 as an investment initiative to house apprentices and members of the printing profession. This type of philanthropic project reflected the mutual support traditions among craft workers and merchants of that era.
The front entrance features a relief showing an open book with inscriptions, crowned by a lion holding a shield that references the printing trade. These symbols mark the courtyard's connection to the book sellers and printers who made their homes here.
Located on Petrus Campersingel, this complex continues to serve as private residences whose owners manage individual units through a foundation. The courtyard remains accessible to visitors, though it functions primarily as a residential space without public amenities.
A poem titled 'Hof' by poet Rutger Kopland was carved into hardstone pavement in the courtyard in 2003 to mark the building's centenary. This inscription adds a thoughtful literary dimension to the everyday experience of the space.
