City Theatre Groningen, Renaissance Revival theatre in Groningen, Netherlands.
City Theatre Groningen is a theatre in Renaissance Revival style, standing in the center of Groningen with a facade of arched windows, columns, and decorative stonework. Inside, it has a main auditorium and a stage used for regular performances throughout the year.
The building was designed by architect Frits van Gendt and opened in 1883. It has gone through several renovation phases since then but has always continued to function as a theatre.
The theatre is a gathering place where people from Groningen come to see drama, dance, and music from Dutch and international companies. The ornate facade overlooking the city center has become a familiar landmark that locals pass by on a daily basis.
The theatre is in the center of Groningen and easy to reach on foot from the main train station. Access to the interior is generally tied to attending a performance, but the facade can be seen from the street at any time.
Frits van Gendt, who designed this building, also designed the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, one of the most recognized concert halls in Europe. Both buildings were completed within a few years of each other and share a similar approach to ornamental stonework.
