Oostbroek, Medieval monastery and estate in De Bilt, Netherlands.
The 88-hectare Oostbroek estate contains Renaissance Revival architecture with a U-shaped main building, orangery, and coach house set within landscaped gardens.
Founded in the early 12th century as Sint-Laurens Abbey, the monastery received substantial donations from Empress Mathilde and Bishop Godebald of Utrecht.
The monastery played a central role in land reclamation east of Utrecht, transforming marshlands into agricultural areas through systematic cultivation methods.
The estate, managed by Het Utrechts Landschap since 1978, connects different natural areas and maintains diverse ecosystems including wet woodlands and meadows.
The monastery functioned as a double community housing both monks and nuns until 1139, when a separate women's monastery was established nearby.
