Sol Lumen, Light sculpture at Willem C. van Unnik Building, Utrecht Science Park, Netherlands
Sol Lumen is a light sculpture at the Willem C. van Unnik Building in Utrecht Science Park. The work uses laser technology to project colored light combinations onto the facade of this approximately 75-meter-tall structure.
The light installation was set up in 2011 as part of efforts to enhance the science park with artistic projects. The building itself has been part of Utrecht University since 1969 and became home to this innovative work of art.
The work brings artistic creativity into the everyday research environment of the university. It shows how contemporary art forms enliven academic spaces and invite students and staff to pause and observe daily.
The work is best viewed in the evening hours when the laser technology fully comes to life and the light combinations become more noticeable. The science park is accessible to visitors, and you can approach the building from different positions to experience the installation from multiple viewpoints.
The light patterns were specifically programmed to change over time, so the installation never looks quite the same twice. This makes each visit a different experience and invites passersby to stop and watch the interplay of colors and shapes again and again.
