Sol Lumen, Light sculpture at Willem C. van Unnik Building, Utrecht Science Park, Netherlands
Sol Lumen is a light sculpture on the facade of the Willem C. van Unnik Building at Utrecht Science Park. It uses laser technology to project changing patterns of colored light directly onto the exterior wall of the tall building.
The installation was created in 2011 as part of a program to bring art into Utrecht University's science park. The building it occupies has been part of the university since 1969.
The work brings artistic creativity into the everyday research environment of the university. It shows how contemporary art forms enliven academic spaces and invite students and staff to pause and observe daily.
The projection is best seen after dark, when the laser patterns stand out clearly against the facade. You can walk around the building from different angles to get a closer or wider view of the work.
The name Sol Lumen joins the Latin words for sun and light, pointing to the interplay between natural and artificial light that the work explores. Although the piece is fixed to the building, its appearance shifts with the seasons and the surrounding light conditions.
