Adventskerk, Reformed church in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands
Adventskerk is a church building in Alphen aan den Rijn with a Greek cross layout where all four arms have equal length. The 40-meter tower and large stained glass windows in yellow, green, and blue tones shape the interior of the building.
After a devastating fire in 1916 destroyed the previous Nieuwe Kerk, architect W.Ch. Kuijper designed this new building. The new church opened in 1922 to replace what was lost.
The church houses a Steinmeyer organ from 1922, one of only two such instruments in the Netherlands and a significant example of Dutch musical heritage. Visitors can experience the craftsmanship of this rare instrument through the acoustics of the space.
The church tower contains 47 carillon bells, with the largest weighing 1,162 kg and played weekly by the city carillonneur. Visitors can hear these public concerts when visiting the outdoor area.
Behind the church stands an independent octagonal chapel from 1773 with a stucco dome vault that once belonged to Baron Theodorus de Smeth. This hidden structure reveals the long history of the site before the current church was built.
