Tong van Lucifer, Copper sculpture on Knardijk, Netherlands
Tong van Lucifer is a copper wire sculpture on Knardijk near Lelystad that stands roughly 9 meters tall and 4 meters wide. The work consists of an inner steel frame wrapped with kilometers of copper wire, giving it a green oxidized surface.
The work was designed in 1993 by Reindert Wepko van de Wint as part of an initiative to enhance the landscape along the A6 highway. These efforts were part of a broader program to improve the surroundings of this major traffic route.
The name of this work sparked debates among residents and politicians about its meaning and placement along the highway. People often stop to reflect on the choice of its title.
The sculpture is visible from the highway and can be observed from several viewpoints along the road. The work requires regular maintenance due to weather damage and copper theft, so its condition and appearance may change over time.
The artwork is visible from great distances and is made from thousands of meters of copper wire arranged in an oval shape. The distinctive green sheen comes from the natural oxidation of copper when exposed to the elements.
