Slot Abcoude, Medieval castle in Abcoude, Netherlands.
Slot Abcoude is a castle located south of Abcoude village, with its foundations and restored moat still visible in the surrounding farmland. The structure features an unusual hexagonal defensive layout that sets it apart from conventional castle designs.
The castle was first documented in 1268 and later suffered destruction at the hands of Gijsbrecht van Amstel. Following reconstruction in 1328, additional fortifications were added to strengthen its strategic position in the region.
The fortress once served as a key military stronghold protecting the Amstelland region from external threats and conflicts. People living nearby depended on its protective presence during periods of instability and regional disputes.
The archaeological site is located about one kilometer south of Abcoude village and is accessible via Koppeldijk near Landlust farm. Wear sturdy footwear when visiting, as the site sits in open farmland and can become muddy or difficult to traverse during wet weather.
Archaeological research in 1995 revealed that the main keep featured an irregular hexagonal floor plan, making it quite different from the typical round or square designs of its era. This unusual shape makes it a notable example of medieval defensive architecture in the region.
