Stadsblokken-Meinerswijk, Natural floodplain park in Arnhem, Netherlands
Stadsblokken-Meinerswijk is a floodplain park along the Rhine, on the edge of Arnhem, made up of open meadows, water channels, and walking and cycling paths. Several entry points are spread around the perimeter, each leading into a different part of the terrain.
This land served as a natural flood storage area along the Rhine for centuries, protecting Arnhem from river flooding. At the end of the 20th century, it was formally shaped into a public nature park, with grazing animals introduced to manage the vegetation.
Konik horses and Galloway cattle move freely through the meadows and are a familiar sight for anyone walking through the area. Many people from Arnhem come here on foot or by bicycle to move through open land that feels far removed from the city.
The area is easiest to explore on foot or by bicycle along the marked paths that wind through the open land. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the ground can be soft or uneven depending on recent rainfall.
Although the park sits right next to a major city, some parts of it have no fixed infrastructure at all, no benches, no paved paths, no signs. The accessible routes can shift from one season to the next, depending on how high the river has risen.
