Castra Herculis, Roman fort remains in Meinerswijk, Arnhem, Netherlands
The archaeological site contains a principia measuring 34 by 38 meters with walls reaching 1.40 meters in thickness at its foundation.
The fort was constructed between 10 and 20 AD, serving as a strategic base for Roman military operations against Germanic tribes across the Rhine.
The principia included administrative offices, supply rooms, and an aedes temple where legions stored their military standards and financial resources.
The excavated sections reveal multiple construction phases, from initial wooden structures to later stone fortifications built during the second century.
Located at the intersection of the Rhine and IJssel rivers, this fort represents the only discovered Roman military installation in Gelderland province.
