Castra Herculis

Castra Herculis is a Roman fort near Arnhem whose remains show how ancient military camps were organized and built. The excavated areas reveal a central administrative building alongside various residential sections and storage facilities that served the garrison over time.

The fort was founded in the early decades after Christ and served as a base for Roman operations along the Rhine. It played an important role in controlling this strategically vital border region across multiple generations.

The principia included administrative offices, supply rooms, and an aedes temple where legions stored their military standards and financial resources.

Visitors can walk around the excavation sites on marked paths that loop through the exposed structures. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the ground is dry and easily accessible.

The fort sits where two major rivers meet, making it a rare Roman discovery in this region. This location was no accident but allowed Romans to monitor river traffic and surrounding territories.
