Balgzand

Balgzand is a nature reserve lying east of Den Helder covering about 6000 hectares of mudflats and sandbars. The landscape transforms dramatically with the tides, revealing expansive flats at low water that submerge again when the tide returns.

The area was recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea due to its ecological importance for migratory birds. This significance grew from the natural habitats here that support millions of birds on their long journeys between northern and southern Europe.

The name Balgzand comes from the Dutch word 'balg', referring to the puffed-up shape of sandbars at high tide. Visitors can watch how local birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts gather here during dawn and dusk hours for observation.

The area is best explored by boat, with excursions departing from the information center at Oostoeverweg 80 in Den Helder. Planning visits around tide tables is essential to make the most of mudflat viewing and birdwatching opportunities.

At high tide, thousands of birds crowd along the dikes waiting for the mudflats to reappear. These moments create dense flocks that are especially striking during sunrise and sunset.
