Balgzand, Nature reserve at Den Helder, Netherlands
The Balgzand nature reserve extends over 6000 hectares east of Den Helder, featuring extensive mudflats and sandbars that emerge during low tide.
The Balgzand area gained recognition as part of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its ecological value for migratory birds.
The Nature Information Centre Balgzand 't Kuitje promotes environmental education through guided tours led by Landschap Noord-Holland volunteers.
Visitors can access the reserve through organized excursions departing from the information center at Oostoeverweg 80 in Den Helder.
During high tide, thousands of birds congregate near the dike, waiting for the emergence of mudflats rich with shellfish, worms, and snails.
